Navel Piercings
Navel piercings are one of the most popular body piercings that we perform, after earlobe and nostril piercings.
Despite their popularity, navel piercings are very anatomy-specific. A common misconception is that someone must be thin to get a navel piercing, but the anatomy is determined based on the shape of the navel itself. Although in some cases, the shape of the navel can shift with a change in weight, it is not a major factor in assessing anatomy.
Our piercers will perform an anatomy check prior to piercing a client's navel, which includes getting the client to stand, sit, and lay down. This allows the piercer to see if there is enough of a shelf (a piece of skin that protrudes from the navel on the top) to support the piercing, if the navel collapses, and if there is enough space behind the shelf for the jewelry.
For clients who have a collapsing navel, or not enough space behind the lip to support the traditional navel jewelry of a bigger bead on the bottom, a floating navel piercing may be an option. Click here to learn more about floating navel piercings.
Although commonly considered a piercing for someone assigned female at birth, people of any genders can get a navel piercing as long as they have the appropriate anatomy.
Important Information
Healing Time (approximate): 6-12 months
Downsize: Not necessary
Standard Jewelry Size: 12g
Standard Jewelry Style: Curved barbell
NOTE: It is extremely important to make sure you keep your fresh piercing out of bodies of water for at least 3 MONTHS post-piercing (preferably closer to 6 months). Bodies of water like pools, lakes, and even bathtubs are harbingers of bacteria and fresh piercings are open wounds. Showers are encouraged, as the running water doesn't submerge your piercing in stagnant water, and thorough drying after a shower is essential.
